What are the best alternatives for a message cipher (doable without a computer)?

I'd like to know what are the best alternatives (in terms of security and ease of use) for a manual message cipher. I know one time pads are if used correctly unbreakable but both ends would have to have a copy of the one time pad, that cannot be memorized, at least easily.
